TOURage good practices in Warmia-Mazury region (Poland) are going to be evaluated

TOURage is going to organize a study visit to Elblag and Warmia-Mazury region (Poland) on 18th of September where good practices suitable for senior tourism will be presented .During the visit eight places will be evaluated by the team of TOURage to discuss whether or not they are transferable to other regions by project partners.

During the study visit Federation of Social  Organizations (FOS) of Warmia-Mazury region will be presented. FOSa is a federation of more than 70 social organizations from the region working in the area of social welfare and integration. It is actively engaged in many activities/projects targeting various social groups, especially seniors and disabled persons. Federation is a co-author of the Regional Programme for Seniors in Warmia-Mazury as well. Activities focusing on senior tourism include „Generation – senior community magazine”, international voluntary work for seniors, study visits for senior communities, the Silver Sharing initiative to be developed with foreign partners.

Later TOURage team will visit Tourism without Barriers Association, which was established in 2006, in Gydnia (Poland). Activities realized by the association focus on the elderly and people with disabilities including series of one-day guided trips for seniors. The Kashubia Without Barriers tourist website has been created and also the Gdynia For Everyone guidebook written.

The idea of „Places with the Soul” theme villages of Warmia-Mazury involves the creation of jobs using the potential, skills and ideas, people and infrastructure of the community. It's the best way for local activity and employment, the chance for economic development of the village. Theme villages are developed around the topic chosen by their inhabitants. The partnership currently includes 10 villages, among the picturesque village of Kadyny and Jędrychowo.

 

Elbląg Canal will be also shown during the TOURage study visit in Poland. A canal in Warmia-Mazury (80.5 km in length) built in the 19th century connects the Vistula Lagoon with the Warmian Lake District. The difference in water levels approaches 100 metres, and is overcome using locks and a remarkable system of inclined planes between lakes. It is considered one of the most significant monuments related to the history of technology and was listed by UNESCO as a memorial to world culture inheritances. In Poland it has recently been named one of Seven Wonders of Poland. The Ostróda-Elbląg Ship Transport Company operates a small fleet of pleasure boats on the Canal and the Lake District. It offers thematic cruises and discounts for 60+ seniors. Annually it transports around 50000 passengers.

Pilgrimage Route is a tourist route connecting 6 famous sanctuaries in the Warmia-Mazury region. Each sanctuary offers a variety of services and attractions for the pilgrims, including accommodation, regional food, herbs, rental of sports equipment, guided tours, etc. The St Mary’s Sanctuary in Gietrzwałd is one of the most famous holy places in Poland. It commemorates a series of apparitions which took place in 1877. Each year the sanctuary is visited by around 1 million tourists and pilgrims. 

 

Finally all the team of TOURage will be taken to Miłomłyn Zdrój Hotel where the holidays for seniors are organized. The Miłomłyn Hotel Medical Spa and Vitality is a three-star hotel located in the Warmia Lake District and promotes healthy lifestyle through a series of services and procedures (spa, medical rehabilitation and diagnostics, sporting activities, etc.) targeting different groups, also seniors.Holidays For Seniors include 3 or 7-day stays at a special price combining spa and medical procedures and diagnostics, with physical activities (Nordic Walking, fitness, aqua aerobic).

 

The Warmia-Mazury Senior Games is a competition for people all over the world who are at least 45 years old. The first edition was held in Poland from 10th to 16th of September 2012 and included many Olympic disciplines, such as track and field, badminton, sailing, beach volleyball, indoor volleyball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, bridge, football and golf. Competitions took place in state-of-the-art facilities in Olsztyn, Iława, Lidzbark Warmiński, Orneta and Naterki, used by both professional and amateurs. Authorities of Warmia-Mazury and project organisers hope to make this event a good way to promote a healthy and active lifestyle. Hence, many additional conferences, exhibitions and activities will accompany the Games. The second edition is scheduled for Year 2014.

 

The last but not the least senior tourism good practice of Warmia-Mazury region will be presented a municipal programme Olsztyn Aktywnie! designed to support and promote sport, tourism and various forms of physical activity in the city of Olsztyn. It offers a series of free-of-charge sporting and tourist activities and events for all age groups, including seniors. The project combines recreation, education, high quality of services, innovativeness thus contributing to creation of a more active community. In 2013 it offers 25 different sports disciplines and activities, including guided tours, mushroom picking, and meditation. More than 15000 participants took part in this programme in 2012.
