Wednesday, April 2, 2014

During the 9-11 April TOURage partnership will meet in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County (Hungary) to experience five good practices of senior tourism there. Good practices suitable for senior tourism will be presented by the partners from Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Regional Development and Environmental Management Agency.  As usually each partner will give the feedback telling whether the visited places and initiatives are appropriate and useful for their own regions to develop senior tourism by transferring the good experience and ideas.

TOURage study visit in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County will begin in Nyírbátor. This city has set up a program called “Faith and Health” which mainly focuses on recreation and religious tourism. Program offers several opportunities for tourists to spend their free time. Complete tourism packages to present the historical, cultural and religious heritages. Máriapócs is the part of this program which is one of Hungary’s biggest pilgrim sites. The Shrine of Máriapócs, has more than 600 000 visitors per year.  After this program, partners will have a “Gastronomic journey in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County”. This program is a great opportunity to give a culinary experience for all the visitors. As we know, senior people always love to taste the local dishes of a region. People in the county are proud of their gastronomic heritage, so it gives a perfect opportunity to guide the tourists through the region.

Also the Hortobágy National Park will present their offer to TOURage partnership while visiting Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County. The park is the first and until now the largest protected natural area of Hungary, which extends on some 82 thousand hectares. The park won the „Part of The World Heritage“ title in 1999 from the UNESCO. In 2008, as "Hungary's best destination for preserving living traditions", it was awarded "EDEN - European Destinations of Excellence" title from the European Commission. The accessibility of the natural park has developed a lot, and can attract such target groups like seniors, which are not in a position to explore the natural park by walking. Therefore one of the most promising element of the developments is railway either safari jeeps which can ensure a larger access to the territory of the natural park. Because of distance Hajdúszoboszló Tourism Destination Management will present their activities and offers without showing any examples in real environment.  Hajdúszoboszló is the most well known bath-city of the Hungarian Great Plain (Hajdúszoboszló is the 3rd most visited spa of Hungary, the average number of spa visitors annually is more than 1 million, one third of them is foreigner). Its main attraction is the bathing complex with its famous spa, open-air bath, Aquapark and the Aqua-Palace. The conditions of active and passive recreation are available in Hajdúszoboszló thanks to the endowments and services of the city. Complex service provision for elderly people visiting Hajdúszoboszló Spa is the most important activity of the Hajdúszoboszló TDM. Offering services for other age groups as well, one of the main target group of the TDM is to serve domestic and foreign senior tourists.

The last good practice shown to the TOURAge partnership will be the “Route of medieval churches”, which as a  program started in 2009. It mainly consists of medieval churches that are under historic building protection and represents the unique character and traditions of the church architecture of this county. The aim of the development was to trace out a thematic route of medieval churches in the Hungarian-Romanian-Ukrainen border area, which was the first common thematic route of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Satu Mare counties and Transcarpathia. In the third part, which under implementation, several churches will be renovated. The route will offer 1-3 day packages for different age groups regarding to their special needs.
