After three fruitful years of project implementation, the TOURAGE project has come to an end. The project was a very successful one and it benefitted both the partner regions and other European regions. It offered new ideas and solutions for improvement of tourism sector and senior tourism development in remote regions. During the project, the partners experienced and learned a lot together.

During the project Vidzeme Planning Region chose two good practices from the partnership to transfer in the region. In the result of one good practice transfer, after 2 months intense trainings, 14 seniors in Amata county became volunteer tourist guides.

An important step was taken when Tourism Operational Programme 2014 - 2020 of North Karelia was approved by the Administrative Board of Regional Council in October 2014. During the preparations of the programme TOURAGE representatives emphasized the importance of senior tourism and its growth prospects.

On 31st of October 2014, TOURAGE project was invited to participate in the International Congress “New Technologies in the service of tourism”, which was held in Alexandroupolis, Greece. The Congress was organized by the project „JTI Target”, implemented by Region of East Macedonia & Thrace.

Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Regional Development and Environmental Management Agency represented TOURAGE in PESTO conference in Graz, Austria on 02-03 October 2014. TOURAGE was invited to present its results and good practice collection.

Granada is a province with a great tourism potential. “Carpathian Sky-Development of tourism products based on astronomy in the region of Slovak-Polish border (Presov Region, Slovakia)” has been the good practice selected to be transferred among all others because Granada has an incipient astro-tourism business sector that works in a separate way.

On 18th of September, 2014 the Final Conference "„Developing Senior Tourism in Remote Regions – Experiences and the Way Forward” was organized at the Committee of the Regions, in Brussels. The primary goal of this conference was to inform about the successful results of the project "Tourage" and introduce the audience with the best good practices` transfers.The research on the needs of local and foreign senior tourists is done and 55 good practices have been collected to offer good ideas how to improve senior tourism model in the Europe. We encourage you to introduce yourself with the presentations in case you were not able to participate in the conference.

On the 18th of September 2014, the project’s final conference, entitled “Developing Senior Tourism in Remote Regions – Experiences and the Way Forward”, will take place at the Committee of the Regions, in Brussels, Belgium. The main objective of the Final Conference is to showcase the results or the project and demonstrate good practice transfers as well as discuss the future trends of senior tourism development in Europe. The Conference will address senior tourism development potentials and provide a platform for networking on European level.More than hundred participants have registered to participate in the conference representing institutions and organizations from all over the Europe.

The Senior Cultural Volunteers Programme was officially launched on the 26th June 2014 in  the Galway City Museum by the Mayor of Galway City, Councillor Donal Lyons. The Good Practice was proposed by the County Council of Granada, Andalucía, Spain and adopted by the Border, Midland and Western Regional Assembly through the co-operation of the Galway City Museum and the members of the Active Retirement Associations located in Galway.

Based on the analysis of 1704 questionnaires filled in by senior citizens in 11 European regions taking part in the TOURage project, a brochure ”What are the needs of senior tourists in the TOURAGE regions” has been issued. This survey reveals the travelling habits, motivations and needs of regional seniors that are on retirement pension. The results of this questionnaire can be employed in the development of regional tourism services for senior tourists in order to meet the needs of senior citizens and in the improvement of regional, national and EU level tourism policies.

TOURAGE project was selected among the 20 best European tourism projects that enhance sustainable tourism development. Altogether around 200 EU projects from different funding programmes were evaluated.The selection was made by the PESTO project (Promoting and networking of EU projects on sustainable tourism) which aim is to provide a platform for enhancing sustainable tourism and raise awareness about the topic. Evaluation was made by the international PESTO consortium who either work in the field of education and training for sustainable tourism development or who are familiar with the tourist industries’ demands.

For many years now, the Federation of Social Organisations of Warmia-Mazury Region (FOSa) has been implementing measures to raise standards of the elderly’s life.FOSa strives to meet the expectations of senior citizens and offers an original method – Silver Sharing Initiative. It is focused on the development of active aging in three areas – social participation, education and tourism. It becomes part of a new trend in social development and tourism that bases upon available resources.

TOURage project organized its 3rd Annual Conference on May 13th in Rzeszów (Poland), hosted by the Marshal`s Office of Podkarpackie Region. All the conference participants were welcomed by the host organisation and were introduced with TOURage project by the project manager Ms. Ulla Äänismaa. The conference addressed the theme of senior tourism market and highlighted that seniors are an important target group in the tourism sector, encouraging entrepreneurs and other tourism actors to develop new tourism products and services for the senior segment or improve already existing ones or even involve seniors in the process of creating new tourism offers.

In the first half of April TOURage team met in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County (Hungary) to evaluate five good practices offered to develop senior tourism.  After presenting all the good practices it was concluded that Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County has a religious tourism as a priority in the region. After the study visit all the partners made their own evaluation on good practices whether they are appropriate and useful to transfer to their own regions. It was noted that it is rather a good thing for regions to have a prioritized development approach as this allows concentrating on financial attraction of funds.

Registration for the international competition Warmia Mazury Senior Games 2014, which will stretch from 28 to 31 August 2014 has started. To participate in the competitions we are inviting everyone - the only condition for participation in the event is age - turned 45 (individual disciplines) or 40 (team sports). The electronic registration for the event will be available till 21st August. During the 9-11 April TOURage partnership will meet in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County (Hungary) to experience five good practices of senior tourism there. Good practices suitable for senior tourism will be presented by the partners from Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Regional Development and Environmental Management Agency.  As usually each partner will give the feedback telling whether the visited places and initiatives are appropriate and useful for their own regions to develop senior tourism by transferring the good experience and ideas. This time good practices “Faith and Health”, “Gastronomic journey in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County”, Hortobágy National Park,Hajdúszoboszló Tourism Destination Management and “Route of medieval churches” will be presented.

In each partner region of TOURage regional analysis exercise was conducted in 2012 in order to collect information on the general patterns of tourism and demographic change in the regions.Chapters of e-brochure analyses the collected data on partnership level, and identifies different european patterns of tourism and demographic change issues  in European regions. Related to this data collection exercise in 2013 a SWOT analysis on senior tourism was conducted in each partner regions.

The Association of Tourism Without Barriers (Poland) was established seven years ago by a group of young people passionate about tourism. Since its inception the Association has been actively engaging seniors and disabled persons. Our experience shows that tourism is a great tool for overcoming different barriers, not only physical but also mental. The world around us can be equally enchanting, no matter if we experience it on a wheelchair, crutches, or only by touching when we are unable to see.

 On Wednesday 6 November the annual conference of the Interreg IVC CesR project was held in the municipality of Motril in Granada (Spain). Over 70 people attended the conference, amongst which were representatives of the tourism sector and tourism technicians from the local entities of Granada province. The purpose was to deepen knowledge of innovative experiences in the tourism sector with the capacity to be implemented in our provinces and to contribute, from knowledge of the demand towards this sector in the province, to improvement and competitiveness of the provincial strategies being designed for the tourism sector for the new European stage of 2014-2020.

The Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg Environmental Management and County Development Agency organized a workshop for the NGO’s of the county. The aim of the meeting was to present the TOURAGE INTERREG IVC project, raise attention on demographic changes in the EU and share the experiences of the project.

Any single solution in itself related to those items above will not solve the problem.  Benefits of accessibility do not simplify only elderly or disabled tourists but also all the other customers assuring high quality in tourism services and environments.

Region of East Macedonia and Thrace (REMTH) seized the opportunity of the organization of the 2013 Panhellenic Trade Fair of East Macedonia – Thrace in order to promote Project Tourage. REMTH as a parallel event also organized a round table conversation of touristic and regional development stakeholders presenting its tourism projects (including TOURAGE) in order to actively involve the relevant bodies in the process of drafting its implementation policies.

According to a survey exploring the travel habits, barriers and motivations of North Karelian pensioners aged 62 or over, North Karelian seniors rely strongly on their own experiences and friends’ recommendations when they are choosing a destination for their holiday trip. They also travel throughout the year. The most popular season for travelling is autumn (61,6 %) and the least favorable summer (31,4 %).

Visit to Prešov region in Slovakia showed the role of the state helping improve the health of seniors  offering subsidised holidays as well as supporting creation of local tourism boards. Accessibility and services for people with dissabilities are taken into account. Several different good practices were shown to stress the need to improve senior tourism.

Thanks to its unique location, natural values, diverse tourist attractions and numerous historical monuments, the region for many year has been attracting thousands of tourists from both Poland and abroad.Tourism has been high on the agenda of the regional development policy and now is being also included in other policy instruments focusing also on the older population.

TOURage is going to organize a study visit to Prešov region (Slovakia) on 13th and 14th of November where good practices suitable for senior tourism will be presented by the partners from Regional Development Agency of the Prešov Self-governing Region. During the visit six places and initiatives will be evaluated by the team of TOURage to discuss whether or not they are transferable to other regions by project partners. Such good practices as “Walks through the Living Spiš”, the Ľubovňa castle,SOREA Hotels,Nestville park, Preservation and promotion of wooden churches on the International wooden route and the project “Carpathian Sky” will be seen.

On 1st October took place the NAT Commission meeting at the Committee of the Regions in Brussels where also social tourism was on the agenda. Dr. Pentti Hyttinen, Region Mayor of North Karelia, was invited to the meeting to discuss the regional aspects of social tourism. Hyttinen introduced the TOURAGE project in the meeting as an example on senior tourism development. He highlighted the demographic change in Finland as an example of ageing and noted that ageing is an ongoing trend in Europe

During 4th September 2013 representatives of the Association of the Polish Communes Euroregion Baltic promoted the TOURAGE project at the 4th Annual Forum of Euroregion Baltic Stakeholders held in Kalmar, Sweden.

Themed ‘Connecting local actors’, the Forum gathered representatives of local and regional authorities as well as experts and practitioners from the tourism sector and labour mobility networks from the cooperation area.

On 12th of September the seminar - workshop in senior tourism was organized by Vidzeme Planning Region. Apart of disseminating idea about TOURage Project and main targets, it was an opportunity to update knowledges in senior tourism marketing as well as participate in parallel workshops  and help creating ideas for an implementation plan to improve senior tourism in the region.

 On June 13th to 14th 2013,the West Regional Authority attended and promoted the TOURage project  at the EU Summit on Active and Healthy Ageing in Dublin. This summit was held in association with  the EU Presidency, jointly organised by the Ageing Well Network and the Global Coalition on Ageing.

In the end of June study visit in Greece were organized to present good practices for senior tourism in the region of East Macedonia & Thrace. Project partners were introduced with the visitor centre of Evros Delta in Traianoupoli, activities of women cooperative of Kokkinogia as well as Therapeutic Mud Baths in Krinides were presented.

The InternationaI Social Tourism Organisation (ISTO), together with a consortium of six organisations, has been mandated by the European Commission to develop a web platform, www.ecalyspso.eu,  linking demand and supply in the field of social tourism to stimulate travelling across European countries. Tourage is interested in the activities carried out in eCalypso project as seniors are part of social tourism they have paid attention.

Tourage project was presented in the Calypso launching event in Brussels on 12th June 2013. Launching event took place in Bozar, the Centre of Fine Arts, and it gathered regional, national and EU level stakeholders and actors involved in social tourism to the same setting. It offered an extensive platform to disseminate the project’s aims, results and activities to a wider European public.

Promoting senior tourism and active ageing is a very important priority in the Lake Balaton Region. Led by this purpose, the Lake Balaton Development Coordination Agency launched an other project as well in this field besides the TOURAGE project. The project “Active Ageing”, financed by the Austria-Hungary IPA Cross-border Co-operation Programme 2007-2013, started in Januray 2013 and will end in December 2014. The project is implemented by the cooperation of 6 organisations from the terrirotory of the micro-region of Schneebergland in Austria and the micro-region of Keszthely in Hungary.

Between 5 and 6th June 2013 in Kadyny the Association of Polish Communes Euroregion Baltic organised a two-day workshop for regional stakeholders focusing on senior tourism in the context of regional policy planning. The workshop resulted from a direct co-operation of the Association with the Warmia-Mazury Regional Centre for Social Policy in Olsztyn and the FOSa Federation of Social Organisations, which are now in the process of drafting a new Regional Programme for Seniors 2014-2020. The Programme is being drafted by a special task force consisting of regional politicians and civil servants, as well as representatives of senior citizen organisations, NGOs, academia and law enforcement agencies. The Association is also directly represented in the task force to actively engage the regional authorities in discussions on the importance of senior tourism and promote the TOURAGE project and its good practices among regional stakeholders. This joint cooperation resulted in the concept of senior tourism, along with other activities such as sports and recreation, becoming one of the key areas of intervention in the new programme.

Study visit hold on 22nd of May was organized to introduce with good practices of senior tourism development in Burgas region, Bulgaria. During the visit five places were evaluated to choose the best good practices from all the partners` regions.  The village of Brashlian in Strandzha National Park, Burgas pensioner’s club in Sozopol, Health Program in the “Specialized Hospital for Rehabilitation-NK” and five star hotel Grand Hotel Pomorie in Pomorie and Sunny Beach and its services for the seniors have been visited during the visit.

Project “Tourage – Developing Senior tourism in remote EU regions” organized its 2nd Annual Conference, which was held on May 21st, hosted by Regional Governor of Burgas, in Bulgaria. All the tourism stakeholders and experts taken part in the conference were greeted by Bulgarian Deputy Minister of Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism Mr.Ivo Marinov, Governor of Burgas District Mr.Konstantin Grebenarov and Deputy Mayor of Burgas Municipality Ms Yordanka Ananieva. Officials emphasized the importance of experience exchange, combination of tourism services to make offers abundant, pointing out the importance of good infrastructure and transport system to develop tourism successfully.

The conference concluded with an idea that cooperation and collaboration between stakeholders, local institutions and enterprenuers are one of the core methods to develop senior tourism succesfully in regions.

"Product Development and Marketing for Senior Tourism in Remote EU Regions”

Project “Tourage – Developing Senior Tourism in Remote Region” organizes its 2nd Annual Conference, which will be held on May 21 in Burgas, Bulgaria and hosted by the Regional Governor of Burgas.

 This time international project leaders and experts will discuss the challenges and possibilities of product development process and marketing strategies for Senior Tourism. The topics raised include new innovations and solutions in tourism industry. Also the results of a survey on the needs and habits of senior travelers in remote regions will be presented. Two thematic sessions “Marketing for Senior Tourism” and “Product Development for Senior Tourism” will be organized where the study cases will be discussed and the regions’ good practices deliberated, resulting in an overall conclusions and recommendations for the development of senior tourism in European regions.

Over 100 companies from the Trade, Tourism, Retail, Health promotion and NGO sectors took stands at the 3rd Trade and Tourism Show held by Active Retirement Ireland (ARI) on 9th of April 2013 in Wexford. The event was very successful with around 2000 people in attendance.

On 21st March 2013 in Elbląg the Association of Polish Communes Euroregion Baltic held a thematic seminar for representatives of local authorities, senior citizens associations, academia and tourism industry entitled “Seniors in tourism – a desirable target group or unwanted customers”. Seminar participants were engaged in a series of discussions focusing on the tourist potential of seniors, evaluation of the quality of the existing tourist offer and the role of local authorities and entrepreneurs in promoting tourism among seniors.

"Seniors - foreigners staying in 2012 Podkarpackie region usually carry recreation trips that last about 8-10 days (32%). Most trips are also weekly (25%) and longer lasting 2-3 weeks (24%). One in ten respondents reported very long trips, lasting one month or more. "- This is one of the conclusions of the research study, realized by team led by Dr. Krzysztof Szpara of Rzeszow University of Information Technology and Management. The initial presentation of the results of these studies took place at the regional workshop held in Marshal’s Office of Podkarpackie Region on March 15, 2013.

 The Age Friendly Business Recognition Scheme is an initiative that has been launched under the Age Friendly Counties Programme.  The Age Friendly Business Recognition Scheme encourages businesses to improve the customer experience for older people. The scheme, by the Ageing Well Network, will encourage businesses to tap into the sizeable over 60s market by improving the customer experience for older people and increase revenue for businesses.

On 22nd February 2013 Tourage project was presented to the partners of Contemporary Old City - Enhancing cultural tourism across the border project financed by the Karelia ENPI CPC Programme and led by the City of Joensuu (North Karelia). The project aims to promote historical and cultural centers and activities in Petrozavodsk and in the city of Joensuu. The project consortium consisting of 4 organisations from North Karelia and 5 from the Republic of Karelia inventories the regions’ cultural and historical offers and creates a joint marketing plan for the regions. Also a platform for the information related to cultural and historical sites will be formed. The meetings held with the two projects showed that there are many possibilities regarding senior tourism in both regions which have many tourist attractions that could be advertised for +55 travelers.

In the end of July 2012 Vidzeme Planning Region together with representatives from Bas-Rhin (France) met for discussion “Senior tourism and Hiking”. Hiking is one of the most popular touristic ways in Europe. Based on cooperation agreement with Bas-Rhin  Vidzeme Planning Region started to develop different hiking routes for several target groups.

Last November, more than 250 older people from Galway City and County came together as part of the Age Friendly County programme for Galway. The Age Friendly County Programme is a key initiative of the Ageing Well Network – an independent network of leaders and heads of organisation across the public, private and voluntary sectors in the field of ageing who share a vision of Ireland as the best country in the world in which to grow old, and are committed to achieving it.

During the second project period, Tourage participated in three different dissemination events held in Joensuu, North Karelia, Finland. The objective was to promote the project, spread information of the demographic change and collect data for the tourism survey that is conducted in each partner region.

Active Retirement Ireland, an organisation that aims to foster independence and solidarity among older people, is making a significant contribution to Irish society, according to a Report produced by the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology, National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG) Ireland.  Active Retirement Ireland is a national network of 550 local Active Retirement Associations that provide a variety of activities for more than 23,000 older people in the Republic of Ireland.

The European Year 2012 has mobilised a wide range of stakeholders across Europe to take action with the aim of creating better opportunities for active ageing and strengthening solidarity between generations. It has given rise to hundreds of new initiatives and events at European, national, regional or local level dealing with employment, social participation and independent living of older people, many of which will be of long-term benefit. A review of these activities is taking place at the closing event of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations 2012 in Nicosia (Cyprus) on 10th December.

At the study tour organized on November 27, 2012, the good practices on senior tourism developments were introduced for the Tourage project partners. The main scene of the study tour was the Thermal Spa at Tamási, where the majority of presentations were held.

The West Regional Authority organised a Study Visit for the participating TOURage Partners leaving Galway City at 9am on Tuesday the 23rd October and travelling firstly to Knock Shrine. Seniors representing various organisations and Good Practices travelled on the coach facilitating informal interaction with the Partners throughout the day.

The Sports Federation of North Karelia and the Finnish Senior Citizens’ Housing Ltd. organised an event called Senior Citizens’ Health Fair on 23th of October in the city of Joensuu, North Karelia, Finland. The fair drew over 1 300 visitors with its diverse programme, including musical performances, doctor’s lectures, panel discussion and sing-along. Also 19 stands with information on different organisations, associations and projects dealing with health and well-being were spread around the fair area. This year the seniors had an opportunity to talk to, among others, the representatives of the Finnish Heart Association, Dementia Association, Disabled War Veterans Association of Finland and the central organisation for Finnish traffic safety (Liikenneturva). The fair was free for the public and exhibitors.

As a part of the implementation of the TOURAGE project, the Association of Polish Communes Euroregion Baltic has begun collecting first questionnaires on the participation of seniors in tourism. Thanks to the invaluable assistance and support from the “Without Barriers” Tourism Association in Gdynia, on 3rd October 2012 the project surveyed more than 40 seniors from the Gdynia area.

In the end of September 2012 project “Tourage” partners met in Granada for projects first Annual Conference and Study Visit. The Study visit was focusing on good practices located in Granada region. All the project partners got information about three examples of good practice in senior tourism: Programme “Alhambra for Seniors”, The accessibility in a tourist cave: Cave of Windows of the municipality of Píñar and The Tropical Coast of Granada, a tourist destination for European senior tourism.

During the first reporting period the Association undertook activities within all component of the project with special focus on communication and dissemination and identification of potential good practices. In order to introduce the project the members of the Association, the information about the project was presented during two meetings with senior local and regional decision makers.

North Karelia University of Applied Sciences have created a definition for the “knowledge of ageing “ in their publication “Check Marks for the Knowledge of Ageing” based on their long expertise in that matter. According to that publication the knowledge of ageing means knowledge and skills in which the global phenomenon of ageing can be seen as an opportunity for all to learn and live a new type of a full life in all sectors and branches of the society.

Vidzeme planning region is one of the most Latvian region in Latvia due to the fact that 85% of citizens are Latvians. With different traditions which are still strongly alive in almost every Latvian family Vidzeme region shares also with its tourists. 12th June 2012 project “Tourage” partners visited the most significant touristic sites in Vidzeme planning region, focusing on senior tourism.

Representatives of local and regional authorities, academic institutions, tourism organisations and enterprises were present to share their ideas on senior tourism on the 8th June 2012 in Debrecen, Hungary. The event was an opportunity to introduce the TOURAGE INTERREG IVC project to the wider audience, and also to focus on the “2012 - European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations” and its contribution to tourism development.

Project "TOURAGE - Developing Senior Tourism in Remote Region" kick-off conference was held from March 19 to March 22 in North Karelia, Finland. During the event 12 regional partners from 10 countries visited several tourist sites in North Karelia and jointly discussed the activities in order to effectively promote senior tourism in the European countries.
